Colombo football club collapses
By Asanka Gammanpila
One of the oldest football clubs in the country, Pettah United from Colombo, has withdrawn from the Premier League championship in the absence of funds and players, the Daily Mirror learns.
Pettah United's president Balandran Anthony however denied the game at the club had collapsed for financial reasons, but admitted players had lost faith in the club.
"Players are not attending practices and we have withdrawn from the tournament. We cannot go on like this", said Anthony.
Pettah United won just two games while drawing 12 and losing the same number of matches at the last Premier League season. Asked what made the Pettah United players lose heart or keep away Anthony said: "Many of our players came from outside Colombo, but this time they have been unable to attend regular practices".
But it is reliably learnt that the main reason for Pettah United's collapse is the lack of funds and less patronage by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka.
Tournament officials of the Football Federation could not be contacted for their immediate reaction to the withdrawal of Pettah United. |
