Hot (weather) hard (pitch) but heroes (us of course)!
Kegalle Youth Club challenged the Mighty Lions to the Kegalle YC Challenge trophy with pomp and ceremony not seen since Charles married Di or since the last World Cup Final in Japan!
First half started with the Lions still in shock over the state of the pitch! The bounce of the ball troubled all the players and Kegalle YC were soon in their stride. There were few chances in the first half due to the pitch and the tempratures which as 5pm felt like it was still around 30 oC. Mucky slipped his man near the corner flag on the left and ran into the box but rather than do the easy thing and pass to either Mick or Colin in the box decided to take a shot which was comfortably taken by the keeper.
Almost immediately Kegalle broke free and their number 13 sloted a goal past a despairing Asanga. Just as quickly though the Lions played the ball through the midfield, it was then hoisted over the back line and into the box. Colin kocked it down to Chandu who passed for Mucky to slot it in. The first tap in of Muckys career! HALF TIME 1:1
The second half started with the lions going after the throats of the Kegalle puppies! The first 20 minutes of the half saw the Lions dominate posession and score 2 more goals. The first goal of which was a superb volley by Steve 20 yards out. It dipped just under the bar! So no longer a 'Once in a Lifetime' chap! ESPN get ready for more footage
The third goal by the Lions was due to the tenacity and will power of Colin who ran down the right flank and curled in a lovely cross at pace. To the delight of the Lions and disgust of the keeper, their last defender could only knock it in the net. OWN GOAL
Well as you guessed the Lions energy level (as usual) began to fade and in the last 20 minutes the Kegalle YOUTH Club (note the capitals) came back strongly to score two goals and level the match
PENALTY SHOOTOUT :!:
Lions triumphed and took the first of many trophies back to Colombo as Kegalle missed 4 penalties (Asanga saved 2) as the Lions took an unassailable 2 goal lead thus winning the match!!!
Well done lads and thank you all in Kegalle for a wonderful reception and of course the gifts!
Want your trophy back??? Come to Colombo next year and play us for it :D
