Well a highly charged game against the Cup finalists.
This team will be playing Black Shadows who beat us 6 nil earlier in the season. We knew it would test us and we would be able to see just how far we had come in little over a year. It was also going to prepare us for the levels needed in the Kotte League.
The match started at a high tempo with the Eagles controlling and passing the ball around very well. They secured a two goal lead in the first 10 minutes and we were pretty quiet and rocked. Then a spate of rash tackles by the Eagles a couple of handballs and a few laughs turned the mighty Lions Roaring!
Matthew came on in the midfield which made an immediate impact as he held the ball up a bit and put it through well for Mucky and Jack. The Eagles defence was solid as when we got the ball they pushed up immediately and caught the forwards offside a few times.
Then Mahlon pounced on a bouncing ball on the edge of the box to slot through into space, Mucky squeezed past their last man and a sprawling goalie to slot in the first.
HALF TIME 2:1 to the Eagles BUT they knew they were in a game!
The second half got off to a great start when Mucky was fed the ball on the right by Matthew, he then beat the keeper and their last defender to it and crossed it to the Toe to.... you guessed it.... tap it in from oh at least 2 yards
2:2 AND The feathers of the Eagles were ruffled to say the least.
At this point it has to be said that almost every week without fail we are playing against not only 11 mean but 2 linesmen and a referee who did not open his mouth once during the game. No yellow cards for blatant fouling and upholding linesmens decisions when they were clearly rooting for the local team.
Anyway the third goal came from the left AFTER the ball had run out of play! It was crossed over to the right and the sharp No 6 player slotted it in. A fierce freekick (ah yes the ref did award them a few) saw the ball crash onto the inside of the top left hand corner and in.
A great goal by the Eagles and it was 4:2.
The Lions had not given up and with less than 10 minutes to go Mucky was put through by the Toe, he cut inside the defender and slotted it in 4:3 and the last 5 minutes were going to be tough for the Eagles.
Unfortunately after the restart a dangerous tackle on Andy caused a bit of a fracas and over 50 of the spectators to come on to the filed which ended the game prematurely. A sad end as it was a firecely contested battle, a hard game and we did ourselves proud from a footballing point of view.
If we continue to play like that when the league starts i think we will quickly gain the respect of the other teams in the league.
WELL DONE LIONS! |
