Colombo Lions 2 – 2 Dialog GSM
Venue – City League Ground
Date - Saturday 17th September

After 6 changes in venue and timing the Lions finally found a pitch that we could play our scheduled match against the Dialog GSM boys. Well done to Marlon for jumping in a 3 wheeler on Saturday morning to make the payment and confirm the pitch.
The return of Colin to lead the lions was overshadowed somewhat by the lack of regular central midfielders due to the absence of Matthew (romantic weekend in Negombo), Stevie (on walkabout down under) and Jack (knackered). This meant some imaginative positional changes by Colin that left Mucky in a midfield role with Ally.
The game started well for the Lions with a lot of pressure on the Dialog defense and with the Dialog team unable to clear their lines from goal kicks because they could only just get it out of their own penalty area, the game was played almost completely in their half. The Toe missed a couple of sitters, one in particular was more like a defenders line clearance than an attempt to put it in the back of the net, Colin hit the post and shot after shot were pulled and pushed wide. Completely against the run of play the Dialog team stormed up their right side to be met by a leftback who was still suffering badly from the previous night’s over indulgence who they comfortably beat to cross the ball to an unmarked player on the back post who neatly slotted the ball in for the first goal. One nil to Dialog.
Again and again the Lions charged in to try to level the score but more squandered chances left us still one down and it finally took a defender to step up to break the deadlock. A perfectly weighted corner from Mucky was met by a rising K2 to be forcefully headed into the back of the net for his first goal for the Lions.
Shortly after equalizing the Lions again went one down when an unsighted Asanga let the ball slip between his legs for a very soft Dialog goal. Half time saw the lions trailing by two goals to one.
Some changes were made during the break and this saw Mucky take up a more usual role up front with Nicolas replacing him in the middle.
The changes had an almost immediate effect when Chandu raced down the right to slip it to Mucky in the middle who laid it off neatly to Colin up front who placed it right where it should be – in the back of the net. Now a level game and the Lions were on the rampage. On a counter attack K2 bravely placed himself directly in front of a powerful passing attempt only to be rewarded by the ball directly to the crown jewels. Groans of sympathetic agony from around the ground and after a brief respite the game went on. The Lions were now firmly camped in the Dialog half but another stroke of bad luck saw the ball deflect of an attackers head only to firmly place itself directly into K2’s already extremely tender jewels. This time the groan of genuine agony could be heard all round the pitch and it was necessary for him to take a break off of the pitch. On came Raj and the Lions continued the attack. It was not to be the Lions day though as chance after chance were squandered with Colin hitting both posts and the bar and many a shot being sent wide.
I think that the Dialog boys were lucky to come away from the game with a draw but that was how it ended. A good spirited game with both sides finishing in mutual applause.

I was beaten by the captain (No16) who stormed indeed down his whole right wing unhindered. Why was he allowed to? Yes, him, wearing the "C" - band (and therefore classifying himself as (probably) one of the/the strongest/fastest/most creative player of his team).
And then, after everyone was watching him for at least 10 seonds, he yet managed:

Before you get too cocky, I'd like to know whose job it was to make him a marked one and thus preventing him from scoring?

The God of Small Things knew why to ring twice, mate!

Good goal though!

are indeed wanted from the forwards who left the scoring to the defence (as well as the defending, of course) and busied themselves with scandering chances.
Well done, lads!

Randall was marking him but he had to leave him to stop the # 16 walking straight at our goal.
Nobodys fault - take it easy tonight
