Saturday 18 February 2006 : Colombo Lions 1 – 3 Sarasavi FC
It all started fairly well. We had to change to the white kit as the oppo turned up in yellow. We played an excellent and well-controlled first 40 minutes, without a goal to either side. The Lions were actually in control of the game and were unlucky not to have made all the pressure count. Then of course they get one good run down the middle and a fine shot just inside the post to go in 1 – 0 up. We wuz robbed Guv.
We swapped players; we slowed the game down; we did everything to play to our strengths. Sarasavi FC were completely uninterested in challenging for any 50-50 ball so we could be confident of getting to the ball first. Our left-back and our right-back changed places at least 4 times in the game just to confuse everyone – mostly themselves. Our midfield played a good solid game down the middle, with one or two killer through-passes. The wingers had a couple of runs into space. The attackers were busy all over the park, with a few shots now and then. So why did it all go so wrong?
An unfortunate goal against 5 minutes before the half did not help. Another against in the middle of the second made it worse. All credit to Sarasavi though – they were the first team I have seen who knew exactly how to protect a lead by playing the ball around the back and making us chase the game. Luckily we stopped that tactic fairly quickly by scoring our one and only goal – a close-in effort from Mucky helping to keep us respectable. Not enough though when the thirds went past us all.
At the end we had played a much better game than seen in recent matches. Scoring 4 would be nice occasionally; the lack of goals has been hurting us of late; although it is not for lack of trying. Keeping a clean sheet (for us) is extremely hard, so we can not rely on that to win us a game. Injuries kept out a few regulars, and more limped off the pitch during the game. When we get back in to the groove we might just win one. If they knock in a couple of own-goals perhaps.
Team: Asanga; James; Dave; Donaldinho; Keith; Stevie A; Matt; Marlon; Previne; Ali; Martyn; Mucky; Karsten; Julian
MoM: Donaldinho – who missed the vote as he was taking his son to the toilet at the time. |
