Lions 2 – 0 Defence Academy

Short version: It was hot, they were strong, they brought their friends with guns, but the Mighty Lions were many and in the end having eleven pairs of ‘fresh’ legs was probably just enough to edge victory.

Long version: We started off by trying to remind the defence boys (army, navy and air force ‘hard men’) that we are the Colombo LIONS not the Colombo TIGERS, small but very important detail. They were clearly stronger and better organized than most of the teams we’ve come across lately, but they were a little shot-shy and never seriously looked like beating what has become a very solid Lions defensive unit. Until late on, a draw looked the most likely result.

The first half was mostly dominated by the Lions, but chances were few and far between, not helped by Farouq being the most honest linesman in Sri Lanka, and getting grief from his own bench for being so flag happy. Disco and Dicky both seemed a bit under the weather, or perhaps worse for wear (the new management team will be wondering if they have inherited a West-Ham style drinking culture here), as a result not many chance created for the ever-lively looking Danny up front. Jacobo (in between bouts of violent Iberian puking) managed to put in a lovely cross only for their keeper to pounce at the feet of the onrushing Danny. ‘Unlucky’ Jacobo, or as they say in Spain “that was shit mate, what do you think you are doing passing it to the keeper like that!?”

At the back Steve and Vergard were mopping most things up, while the full backs were hardly tested. The front pair came off and went back to sleep, while Mucky came on and did very well to miss a great chance in front of goal…what’s Spanish for ‘unlucky’? John then had a free header, catching practice for the keeper, unlucky mate.

It continued to get hotter, and part of my brain melted, so I don’t remember much of the second half, highlights being:

-Our choice of replacement linesman was rejected on the grounds that he was a Norwegian
-Danielli had some really ‘unlucky’ touches, but had the loyal support of his team mates
-Mucky injuring himself whist practicing his diving skills
-Pablo trying to sign up to the tigers suicide squadron by chasing round after soldiers about four times his size looking for a fight
-I somehow managed to offend this Great Nation by respectfully asking the referee for a penalty, then suddenly waking up to score two beauties (top class assists from Rich and Steve A)
-Well done Previne for keeping the Lions youth policy going. Who’s next?

Second half we made so many changes it was hard to keep up, but the opposition tired, and we managed a couple of nicely worked goals, and could of had a few more as we carved them open on numerous occasions. In the end a hard fought win, solid defending all round especially from the back four who were left exposed from time to time. Some good passing from midfield in the end and a couple of nice goals (did I mention those already?) to secure a tasty win. It’s good to play, and beat, a half decent side who don’t have an average age of 14 (no offence Pablo). I reckon we should beat them in the rematch as well, just be sure to inform you next of kin before we set off to Ratmalana.
